Minister of Energy & Energy Industries, Trinidad & Tobago

Stuart Richard Young was a practising attorney before being elected to Parliament on September 8, 2015, as the member for Port-of-Spain North/St Ann’s West.

He first served as a Minister in the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs.

Since then Young has served in several Ministerial capacities- as Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister before being confirmed as Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, as Minister of Communications and Minister of National Security.

On April 19, 2021, he was appointed Minister of Energy and Energy Industries in addition to his duties as Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister.

Young is the chairman of the Finance and General Purposes Committee of the Cabinet (F&GP), and a member of a number of Cabinet Sub Committees including, the National Security Council, the Standing Committee on Energy and the Human Advisory Committee.

He has served as a member of a number of Joint Select Committees of the Parliament, including the Energy Affairs committee (as Deputy Chair). He also serves as a member of the Committee of Privileges and the Statutory Instruments Committee.

A graduate of St Mary’s College and the University of Nottingham where he studied law, Young was admitted to the bar in Trinidad & Tobago, England and Wales, the Commonwealth of Dominica and Antigua and Barbuda.

He has appeared as Counsel in Commissions of Enquiry, including, the Piarco Commission of Enquiry, the Commission of Enquiry into the Construction Sector and the Commission of Enquiry into the Hindu Credit Union and CLF.

He is a member of the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn in the United Kingdom. He has served as a Member of the Council of the Law Association and as a Member of the Legislative Committee of AMCHAM.

He was appointed to the People National Movement’s (PNM) team in the Senate as a temporary Opposition Senator in March 2014 and is now serving his second re-election as the PNM’s MP for the Port of Spain North/ St. Ann’s West constituency.
